Mbappé Outshines Brazil, England, Portugal, and Spain with Knockout Stage Goals
France's goal-scoring sensation, Kylian Mbappé, continues his prolific run at the North American World Cup, finding the net in almost every match, whether in the group or knockout stages.
The Real Madrid forward's winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Paraguay marked his 11th in the World Cup knockout rounds. Since his tournament debut in 2018, Mbappé has now scored more goals in this phase than footballing powerhouses like Brazil (10 goals), England (10), Portugal (9), and Spain (4). The 27-year-old has netted these goals across ten knockout matches.
The captain of "Les Bleus" also leads all players in World Cup history in this regard. His closest challengers, Brazilians Leonidas and Ronaldo, each have eight goals, scored in five and ten matches respectively. The tournament's all-time leading scorer, Lionel Messi, who boasts a total of 20 goals, has only found the net six times in 13 knockout stage appearances. As is well known, Mbappé's total World Cup goal tally stands at 19, matching his number of games played.
