Olympique de Marseille's official club shop on the iconic La Canebière boulevard was ransacked during the unrest that swept through France on October 17. The incident caused extensive damage, forcing the Ligue 1 outfit to temporarily close the premises. Marseille have strongly condemned the violence while offering full support to their kit partner, Puma, who operates the store.
In an official statement, the club said: "Olympique de Marseille condemns in the strongest terms the acts of violence and looting suffered by its official store on La Canebière, and expresses solidarity with its partner Puma, which manages the site." The club added that the significant damage necessitates a temporary closure to the public. Supporters can still access OM's other official retail outlets across the city, and the club will notify fans once conditions permit the shop to reopen.
Marseille also praised the employees of the German sportswear giant, their internal staff, and all teams involved in the immediate response, commending their "exemplary commitment, composure, and professionalism" in dealing with the situation.
The looting formed part of wider unrest that flared up in central Marseille during the October 17 demonstrations. Protests against the rising cost of living and issues with public services turned volatile, descending into clashes, vandalism, and the targeted looting of commercial outlets. Marseille's store was not the only football-related casualty over the weekend, with Lille's official club shop also coming under attack.
