The defending world champion crossed the line ahead of Italian Valentino Rossi to match the mark set by the Movistar Yamaha rider.

However, Rossi only claimed second following an error from Marquez's Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa, which came during an enthralling last-lap battle.

The lead changed hands on multiple occasions as Pedrosa aimed to prevent his Spanish compatriot from etching his name into the record books once again.

Pedrosa, who had started the race on pole, ultimately saw his chances come to an end at turn 11 as he clipped Marquez's back wheel.

The contact sent Pedrosa wide, giving Marquez the opportunity to seal victory and allowing six-time champion Rossi to take second.

Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was fourth, while LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl rounded off the top five.

Marquez's triumph takes him to 175 points, 58 ahead of Rossi in second, with Pedrosa five points further back.

The 21-year-old will aim to claim sole possession of the record for successive wins at the TT Assen race in the Netherlands in two weeks' time.
