The Premier League returns following the international break with a high-stakes clash at Old Trafford, as Manchester United host Tottenham in gameweek 6. Both giants have endured underwhelming starts to the campaign and are in desperate need of a win to ease the growing pressure.

Both clubs had hoped for a far stronger start to the season and head into this encounter from unenviable positions. Michael Carrick's Manchester United sit 12th in the table with five points from their opening five fixtures (one win, two draws, and two defeats, with an 8:8 goal difference). In their last league outing, the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw away at Fulham.

The situation is even more concerning for Tottenham. Roberto De Zerbi's side are rooted to the bottom of the table in 20th place, still searching for their first league victory after two draws and three defeats, having scored just two goals while conceding eight. Last time out, Spurs suffered a 3-2 home loss against Aston Villa.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi admitted the break was tough on the squad: "It was very hard, especially during the first week. But that is football and we have to respond. I've been waiting for this match for three weeks because after the loss to Aston Villa, I wanted to play again the very next day." The Italian confirmed that James Maddison is fully fit and available, while Pedro Porro and Mykhailo Mudryk miss out through injury.

Manchester United will be without Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte due to injury. However, the hosts are expected to feature Bruno Fernandes, who is among the side's top scorers this season with three goals, alongside Marcus Rashford and Bryan Mbeumo in the starting lineup.

In their previous meeting at Old Trafford in February 2026, Manchester United secured a 2-0 victory. However, Tottenham have enjoyed positive moments in this fixture recently, including a Europa League final triumph in May 2025 and a dramatic 4-3 Carabao Cup win in December 2024.
