Palace started brighter and should have taken the lead in the second minute when Wickham curled in a fine cross from the left and Delaney rose unchallenged at the back post to meet it.

Delaney met it cleanly from six yards out with the goal at his mercy but headed the ball straight at Joe Hart.

For the next 20 minutes, Palace were on top, causing City’s defence problems with a series of corners.

City took the lead midway through the half when Fabian Delph received the ball 25 yards out and was allowed to cut in from the right.

The midfielder unleashed a fierce left foot shot that bounced just in front of Wayne Hennessey and squeezed under his dive.

Palace threatened to level when Hart’s kick from his hands hit McArthur on the back and fell to Delaney.

Delaney tried to hook the ball into the net but Zabaleta put him off and he lifted his effort high and wide.

Hart dived sharply to his left to save a Yohan Cabaye free-kick.

City doubled their lead by Sergio Aguero whose shot from 30 yards deflected off  Dann  to beat Hennessey.

Palace started the second half brightly again but City scored two more goals after Yaya Toure was introduced.

The big midfielder was at the heart of a superb team goal from City.

Toure laid a ball wide to Kevin De Bruyne who picked out Aguero eight yards out and the Argentine fired into an empty net.

Five minutes from the end City added another through David Silva.
