Murray beat the German in the rescheduled Munich Open final on Monday to claim his first clay-court title, but Kohlschreiber's 6-1 6-4 win means he will get an immediate chance for redemption.

Kohlschreiber raced into a 5-0 lead as Falla only won eight points, and the German repeated the feat in the second to secure his progression.

All the seeds booked their places in the next round on Wednesday, with Stan Wawrinka leading the way in a hard-fought battle with Joao Sousa.

The 2013 runner-up started sluggishly as Sousa broke in the first game, but Wawrinka fought back and eventually moved ahead in the tie-break.

He wrapped up his 7-6 (7-1) 7-5 win with a much better display in the second " his backhand particularly impressive " something he will look to build on after a tough couple of months that has seen him failed to get past the round of 16 in his last three tournaments.

Fellow seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga,Milos Raonic and Roberto Bautista-Agut all cruised through in straight sets, while Grigor DImitrov was handed his win when a back injury forced Donald Young to retire with the score 6-4 3-0 to the 10th seed.

Tuesday also saw Jack Sock, Gael Monfils, Nick Kyrgios, Richard Gasquet and Leonardo Mayer triumph without dropping a set, while Martin Klizan's first-set retirement saw Marcel Granollers progress.

Elsewhere, Fernando Verdasco and Albert Ramos-Vinolas gave the home fans plenty to cheer as they both came from a set down to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Pablo Cuevas respectively.
