After a disastrous start, which saw Liverpool lose 4-1 to Napoli last week in their UCL opener, the Reds were close to dropping further points before Matip struck a late winner.

Speaking after the game, the 31-year-old started by saying that Liverpool deserved to win the game.

“I think we deserved to win even if it was a late goal,’’ the Cameroonian star stated. “But we worked quite hard and I am happy that I could get that one at the end.

Patience was the key for Liverpool

Speaking further on the victory, Matip noted that patience was key for the Reds against a great Ajax team.

“You had to be (patient),” he continued. Patience was important but you never know because Ajax are a great team and you never know if we could score at the end. But I think we worked quite hard for this win and result.”

Liverpool back on track

Liverpool opened their campaign with a heavy defeat to Napoli in Naples but Matip believes the Reds are now back on track.

“Of course, it was a proper knock after our last game. So, to get back on track and take three points from a great team is a good step,” he added.
