Liverpool has officially confirmed that forward Hugo Ekitike has suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, an injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season and rule him out of the World Cup with the French national team. While Anfield officials are refraining from setting a definitive recovery timeline for Ekitike, initial projections suggest he won't play again until late 2026, requiring at least nine months of rehabilitation. A more pessimistic scenario could see him out for up to 12 months.
Ekitike sustained the injury during the first half of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, after slipping on the wet Anfield pitch. It was immediately apparent he was in severe pain and had to be stretchered off the field.
The 23-year-old Frenchman had enjoyed a strong debut season with Liverpool, having joined last summer from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million. He netted 17 goals and provided six assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.
