But the Malaysian fell at the final hurdle, with China's Chen posting a 21-19 21-19 win in Copenhagen.

Lee was not his usual self and struggled to dictate the contest, with Chen eventually claiming victory in just 69 minutes.

"I have won the Denmark Open in Odense but this is my first world championships gold medal," Chen said.

"I enjoyed this victory. I'd like to thank the Danish fans."

Another upset also occurred in the women's draw as Spain's Carolina Marin defeated top seed Li Xuerui in three sets to win the title.

Marin came from behind to eventually edge an epic contest 17-21 21-17 21-18 and become the first Spanish world badminton champion.

Marin also became just the third European world champion in the history of the sport.
