In the 13th minute, fans began hurling paper airplanes onto the pitch, prompting the referee to temporarily halt play. During the stoppage, home players Oscar Valentin and Isi Palazon went over to speak with the ultras behind the goal, while the stadium announcer warned that the match would be suspended if the protests continued.
However, as soon as play resumed, objects rained down onto the field once again, leaving the referee with no choice but to send both teams into the dressing rooms.
The fixture marked Rayo's first league game at their home stadium this season after Madrid authorities had shut the venue due to safety concerns. Up until this point, the club had been forced to stage their home matches in neighbouring Leganes.
Rayo supporters and players have long been protesting against Presa's ownership, voicing strong discontent over his management of the club and the deteriorating state of both the stadium and training facilities, AFP noted.
