La Liga Chaos: Rayo Vallecano fans force abandonment of Athletic Bilbao clash on return to Vallecas

The La Liga matchday 8 fixture between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao descended into chaos, ultimately being abandoned following protests from the home supporters. The match marked Rayo's return to their Vallecas home after 146 days away. However, the homecoming was cut short after home fans began showering the pitch with paper planes and balls from the 14th minute in protest against the club's board. A central catalyst behind the unrest is the dilapidated state of Vallecas, which had previously forced the Madrid outfit into an extended groundshare at Leganes.

The incident is almost certain to cost Rayo a forfeit defeat alongside a substantial financial sanction.

Rayo had made a bright start to proceedings, with Sergio Camello seeing an early goal chalked off for offside before Unai Simon was forced into a sharp save to deny Jorge de Frutos. Around the 13th minute, however, the contest was halted for over half an hour as Rayo supporters hurled paper planes and balls onto the pitch in protest against the club's hierarchy.

Chief among the supporters' grievances is the poor condition of their stadium. Fans behind one of the goals directed their frustration squarely at club owner and president Raul Martin Presa, unfurling a banner with the message: "Presa, the ball is on your roof."

Referee Jose Sanchez Martinez eventually led the teams off the pitch. After a delay of more than 35 minutes, an attempt was made to restart play, but fresh waves of projectiles from the stands forced the referee to call a definitive halt to the match and order the players back into the dressing rooms for good.
