Kevin Durant believes LeBron James' arrival has transformed the Philadelphia 76ers into a top contender for the NBA title.

James officially joined Philadelphia in late July, ending his eight-year tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers and returning to the Eastern Conference for his 24th NBA season.

During a USA Basketball event, Durant drew parallels between the excitement surrounding Philadelphia's star-studded roster and the criticism his Golden State Warriors teams once faced.

Durant spent three seasons with the Warriors alongside Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, securing two championships and two NBA Finals MVP awards.

"The last time they put three 20-point scorers on one team, they said it was unfair, and that was the Warriors team I was on," Durant stated, as quoted by Ben Golliver of ESPN. "The 76ers have four guys who can score 25 points. So, yeah, hell yeah, I think they'll be contenders. They'll be a fun team to watch. It'll be worth subscribing to League Pass."

James joins a Philadelphia core that includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and newly acquired Jaylen Brown.

Maxey led the 76ers with averages of 28.3 points and 6.6 assists per game during the 2025-26 regular season, while Embiid posted 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 38 appearances.

Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in his final season with the Boston Celtics. Meanwhile, James contributed 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game for the Lakers.

The challenge for Philadelphia will be finding the right balance among its ball-dominant stars, but Durant anticipates the Sixers' immense offensive talent will make them one of the league's most exciting teams.

Durant also revealed he had no prior knowledge of James' plans.

"I didn't know at all," Durant said. "LeBron is secretive like that. I know there's a lot of buzz around him, but you never know what's on his mind," KD added.

The four-time scoring champion believes Philadelphia is a strong final destination for James as the NBA's all-time leading scorer continues his pursuit of a fifth championship.

"I'm happy for him," Durant continued. "It's a great decision for him to go to a team with a good chance to win. Philadelphia has a great fanbase, a big market, and it's great for the league. So many eyes were on his decision," the Houston Rockets forward added.

After announcing his move, James stated his belief that he could help Philadelphia become a championship team. He will attempt to become the first player in NBA history to win titles with four different franchises, having previously lifted the trophy with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and LA Lakers.
