Former SA midfielder dies at 49

Former South Africa midfielder John 'Shoes' Moshoeu has died after losing his battle with cancer.

According to his manager  Glyn Binkin, the former Fenerbahce footballer died on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 21 at the age of 49

His agent took to Twitter to announce the demise of the John Moshoeu who also played for South African club side Kaizer Chiefs.

"John Shoes Moshoeu sadly passed away at 15h00 this afternoon after a long but brave battle with cancer. May his dear soul rest in peace!!" Binkin tweeted.

"He may be gone but will never be forgotten and his family have requested their privacy and that they may be allowed to mourn in peace," he added.

Moshoeu started his football career in Kaizer Chiefs and played for the club from 1988 to 1993 before returning for a second stint from 2003 until 2006.

He also played for Turkish league sides Fenerbahce and Bursaspor from 1997 until his return to South Africa in 2003.

Regarded as one of the greatest footballers from South Africa, 'Shoes' was capped 73 times for Bafana Bafana, scoring eight times.

Most notably, he was one of Bafana's stand-out performers in their 1996 African Cup of Nations triumph, scoring four goals in the tournament.
