The Jos-born footballer has linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge next summer with recent reports suggesting that may join his former coach, Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

The player's close associate Chinenye Kanu has however revealed that Mikel will remain at Chelsea.

“ It’s one of those transfer rumours we hear all the time. I am convinced that Mikel will stay at Chelsea next season,’’ Kanu told Newswatch.

“ He is still a very important squad player for Chelsea and Mourinho so I don’t think he has any plan to play somewhere else. He has a contract with Chelsea till 2017 and he has never had an intention of leaving. He is going to honour his contract until the last day and when it expires we will think about what to do next but for now he is at home in England and he is really happy here.’’

Mikel won his second Premiership title with Chelsea after the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend and Kanu believes he would be motivated to stay with the aim of winning more silverware in the next few campaigns.

Kanu added: “personally he is satisfied with himself and with the team’s performances. He will stay to fight for his place and probably regain his first team shirt. Mikel loves winning trophies and he  is hoping to win many more titles in the future at this club.’’
