The 42-year-old's third win in Michigan and first since 2001 saw him overhaul team-mate Dale Earnhardt Jr (813 points) with 816 points in 2014.

Team Penske's Brad Keselowski (733 points) sits third, while Logano (714) and Joe Gibbs Racing's Matt Kenseth (709) complete the top five in the overall standings.

Gordon claimed the chequered flag in Brooklyn, Michigan, to add to his victories at the Brickyard 400 and the 5-hour Energy 400 this year.

The race was effectively decided on the last restart when Gordon got ahead of Logano, who led for 86 laps on Sunday.
