Ja Morant Set to Start the Season Off the Bench in Portland

Guard Ja Morant is likely to start the 2026/27 campaign coming off the bench for the Portland Trail Blazers, according to reporter Marc J. Spears.

The two-time NBA All-Star and former face of the Memphis Grizzlies was brought in as one of the franchise's biggest acquisitions after enduring a string of health issues and off-court controversies in recent years. However, a crowded and talented backcourt looks set to relegate him to a reserve role to begin the season.

The competition across the backcourt includes a healthy Damian Lillard returning from injury, seasoned veteran Jrue Holiday, and promising young guard Scoot Henderson. Shaedon Sharpe is also expected to compete for significant playing time at guard, though he remains sidelined long-term through injury.

During preseason play, Morant featured in three contests, earning two starts and making one appearance off the bench.
