Infamous 'Spam King' found guilty of sending over 27 million Facebook messages

One of the Internet's all-time notorious spammers will be going to jail after pleading guilty to sending 27 million unwanted messages to Facebook users.

Sanford Wallace, aka "the Spam King," aka "Spamford Wallace," admitted that he unlawfully gained access to over 500,000 accounts on the network between 2008-9 in violation of a court order.

This is far from his first clash with the law -- Sanford was annoying consumers well before the internet came along, when he sent junk faxes in violation of laws that had been enacted in 1991. Since then, he has faced various lawsuits for email spamming, multiple-window launching spyware scams and MySpace phishing, and these only scrape the top of his rap sheet.

So far, Wallace has been fined well over $4 million, and Facebook also won $711 million in damages in a 2009 lawsuit against the infamous ‘spam king’.

Although Zuckerberg & Co. never collected any money from him due to Wallace's bankruptcy, the judge in the case strongly recommended that the tech giant pressed criminal charges.

At the end of a two-year FBI investigation, a grand jury did press criminal charges and charged him with electronic mail fraud, damage to protected computers and criminal contempt.

With the guilty plea, Sanford is now looking at up to three years in jail and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on December 7th.
