It said that the four crew members and part of the wreckage were found around 500 metres east of Mt Takakuma on the Island of Kyushu.

"The 15-metre twin-engine jet, which had been inspecting air navigation facilities, disappeared from radar at around 2:35 pm on Wednesday (0535 GMT) about 10 kilometres north of the Kanoya military air base,’’ Defence Ministry officials said.

There was thick cloud around the airbase at the time of the crash.

However, the military has given no indication as to why the crash might have occurred.
