Citizens in the president’s hometown of Surakarata hit the streets on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 to witness the wedding parade for the country’s first daughter who marries Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution.

The groom, a property businessman, is a member of the Batak ethnic group.

The bride’s hugely popular father is from the central Java region and the flamboyant wedding was held according to their traditions.

The evening before the wedding, the president's family took their daughter through a string of several Javanese traditions and for the big day itself,  about 8,000 official guests were invited, including many politicians.

As expected of Javanese weddings, people took to the streets wearing ethnic costumes from all parts of the diverse country.

President Widodo also hired 50 cycle rickshaws to carry some of his guests so that all levels of society could take part and also earn some money from it, according to reports.

This colourful ceremony reminds us of that time in 2014 when President Goodluck Jonathan shut down Nigeria’s capital city with his first daughter’s wedding.

The ceremony was televised live on NTA and customized gold-plated iPhones were given out as souvenirs.
