Canada thrash Russia for IIHF glory as USA take World Championship bronze

Canada claimed Ice Hockey World Championship glory with a crushing 6-1 final victory over Russia in Prague.

Cody Eakin opened the scoring to set the Canadians on their way to a first world title since 2007 as his team powered clear during a dominant second period.

Some quick thinking from Tyler Ennis made it 2-0 before Sidney Crosby and Tyler Seguin struck in quick succession to prompt a timeout from Oleg Znarok.

But the Russia coach was unable to halt his team's slide, with Claude Giroux adding a fifth in the third period following fine play by Crosby.

Nathan MacKinnon crowned a glorious attacking performance from Todd McLellan's team before Evgeni Malkin netted for the smallest crumb of Russian comfort.

In the bronze medal match, the United States sent the home crowd away disappointed with a 3-0 win over Czech Republic.

The Americans took control during the first period thanks to goals from Nick Bonino and Trevor Lewis.

The hosts had plenty of chances as Connor Hellebuyck made 39 saves and Charlie Coyle made victory secure by adding a goal to his earlier assist.
