Iain Balshaw retires due to injury

Former England full-back Iain Balshaw has announced his retirement from rugby union after failing to recover from a knee injury.

The 35-year-old, who came on as a replacement in England's World Cup final victory over Australia in 2003, announced on Friday that he had opted to end his playing days, having struggled with an injury sustained while playing for French club Biarritz.

He said: "After 16 months of unsuccesful knee rehab it is finally time to call it a day on my rugby career!

"I would like to thank each and everyone of you, especially those at Bath, Leeds, Gloucester and Biarritz Olympique Rugby Clubs, who have played a part in the last 17 years.

"Through you I have had some amazing experiences, travelled the world and made some life-long friends and for that I am truly grateful."

Balshaw made 35 appearances for his country and also toured Australia with the British and Irish Lions in 2001.
