"I won everything in Europe" Ronaldo reveals Al Nassr motivation during stunning unveiling
Cristiano was finally unveiled as an Al Nassr player after completing one of the most shocking and opulent transfer moves in football history.
The five UEFA Champions League winner and five time Ballon d’Or recipient was all smiles at his first press conference with Al Nassr, where he attended to questions posed to him by journalists.
Speaking on his decision to join an Asian club, Ronaldo pointed out that he was proud to join Al Nassr and had done everything there was to do in Europe meaning he was now ready for a new challenge in Asia.
A new challenge outside Europe for Ronaldo
Ronaldo played in four of Europe's biggest leagues and won the La Liga, Premier League, and Serie A titles to go with his five UCL titles and a slew of domestic cups.
He also leaves Europe as the only player to be the top scorer in the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A, and is also the top scorer in the history of Real Madrid and the UEFA Champions League.
“I am so proud to make this big decision in my life. In Europe, my work is done. I won everything and I played in the most important clubs in Europe. For me, now is the new challenge and I am glad that I have the opportunity to show and develop not only for football but for the young generation. I feel very happy and proud.”
Ronaldo's motivation for joining Al Nassr was not the money
He also reiterated his goal to help develop football at the club and in Saudi Arabia generally, and to change the perception of football fans about the country’s football by bringing his wealth of experience from playing in the top European leagues with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Juventus.
Despite the rumoured €200 million per year wage package, Ronaldo claims that this is the true motivation for his move to Saudi Arabia and revealed that he refused offers from all over the World just to honour Al Nassr’s offer.
He said, “I can say now, I had many opportunities in Europe, Brazil, Australia and the United States. Even in Portugal, many clubs tried to sign me, but I gave my word to this club, to develop not only football but also the other parts of this country. For me this is a good chance with my knowledge and experience to grow very important clubs,”
“I want to change the mentality of the new generation and had many opportunities in Europe, Brazil, US and Portugal tried to sign me but I have my word to this club.
“I know what I want and I know what I don’t want. I want to help many different points and the Al-Nassr’s women's team. I want to change the perspective of many people,”
He also spoke of the current level of the league which many believe to be weak, opposing that stance and calling it competitive and even giving a possible timeframe for his first official appearance.
"Many people speak and give their opinions but they don't know much about football.
"All the teams are ready. You have many surprises, South Korea, the African teams, Costa Rica.
"I don't care what people say. I know this league is competitive. I hope to play after tomorrow."
“It’s not easy to win any games today. The evolution of football is different and this isn’t the end of my career by moving to the Middle East.
“For me, I’m really happy to be here and I know the league is competitive. I’ve watched many games.”
Ronaldo could be in line to make his competitive debut on Thursday January 5th when Al Nassr take on Al-Ta'ee and will no doubt be in for another hero's welcome in his first official match.
