Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler offered an interesting perspective on his side's defeat away to Liverpool at Anfield. The Merseysiders struck twice early on before defending resolutely and playing on the counter-attack. Brighton dominated 65% of the possession and finished the match with a higher expected goals tally, but ultimately failed to get back into the contest. Hurzeler felt the result was unfair, claiming his side were the only ones trying to be creative and proactive.
"I think everyone in the stadium felt it was a missed opportunity for us, because we created chances not just after their goal or the goals they scored," he said. "Before they scored, we had one or two great chances. Today, I think the difference was simply that they scored and we didn't. They kept a clean sheet because they defended well—their centre-backs, full-back Araujo, and Kerkez as well. I think they blocked a lot of shots and defended exceptionally well inside the box. We lacked that kind of efficiency."
"I think we could have achieved much more and definitely deserved more. Looking strictly at the performance, everyone in the ground saw there was only one team really trying to create and win the game—and for that, I have to give credit to my players."
"I believe we did enough—we had enough opportunities at Anfield to create openings and score plenty of goals. Today, however, we lacked the finishing touch," stated Hurzeler, whose side suffered just their second league defeat of the campaign.
