An extended half-time interval in the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina (July 19, 9:00 PM CEST) could increase injury risk and diminish player performance.

“We know that a 15-minute half-time interval is enough for muscle temperature to return to resting levels. Elevated muscle temperature is linked to higher power output and faster force development. Therefore, a warm-up is effective not only in reducing injury risk but also in improving physical performance.

Should the break be extended, this drop in muscle temperature would likely be even more significant,” DPA quoted Liam Harper, Assistant Professor of Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Sport.

Harper also suggested that FIFA should provide players with an additional warm-up of several minutes to mitigate the effects of an extended half-time break. During this time, various music stars, including Justin Bieber, Shakira, and Madonna, are scheduled to perform at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
