At 22 years old, the Frenchman became the youngest basketball player to win the award, as well as the first San Antonio player since Kawhi Leonard's two consecutive seasons receiving it (2014/15 and 2015/16). Wembanyama is also the first player to win the award in one of his first three seasons in the League, since Spurs legend David Robinson in 1991/92.

Every one of the one hundred voters placed Victor Wembanyama in the top spot, making the 224-centimeter tall center the first unanimous winner of the award in NBA history. Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder finished second, with Ausar Thompson (Detroit Pistons) coming in third.

The Frenchman concluded the regular season averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds (9.5 of which were defensive), and 3.1 blocks.
