His gamble failed, and he faces immense criticism. Australian FA backs its coach
Popovic faced particular criticism for his decision to substitute first-choice goalkeeper Patrick Beach shortly before the end of extra time, sending Mathew Ryan in for the penalty shootout. The experienced shot-stopper ultimately failed to save a single opponent's shot, and Egypt triumphed 4-2. Questions also arose regarding his choice to include only 18-year-old Lucas Herrington among the penalty takers, who subsequently missed his attempt.
“Every fan will ponder what could have been done better. However, the coaching staff and Tony Popovic are best placed to assess what the team needs at that moment. Hindsight is always 20/20, but decisions must be made based on what you observe in training and through communication with the players. Tony Popovic has our full confidence,” stated Football Australia CEO Martin Kugeler.
Popovic took charge of the national team in 2024 and guided them to their sixth consecutive World Cup. Shortly before the tournament began, he extended his contract until the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. “We are completely satisfied with the decision to extend his contract. He is the right person to lead this team to the next major tournament and build on the experience gained from the World Cup,” Kugeler added for AFP.
