High Demand for RMC Motorsport's 2027 WRC Challenger

Even though Spanish outfit RMC Motorsport's new challenger for the 2027 World Rally Championship (WRC) has yet to turn a single testing wheel, demand is already outpacing the team's production capacity. Team founder Roberto Mendez revealed that 13 drivers have shown serious interest in purchasing the car, including an entire team looking to secure two chassis.

Development is progressing in close collaboration with the Royal Spanish Automobile Federation (RFEDA). This makes RMC the second privateer outfit, following Belgium's Project Rally One, to officially commit to the premier WRC class under the upcoming technical regulations. Operating with a compact squad of eight to ten employees, the Spanish team initially faced skepticism from the FIA over whether such an ambitious testing programme could be sustained within their budget.

The team's 2027 schedule outlines a minimum of five WRC rounds. The official debut is slated for the asphalt stages of Rally Islas Canarias, followed by its first gravel test—initially targeted for Rally de Portugal, though an alternative event is now being sought. The campaign will then head to the Americas, a region driving the strongest customer interest, with buyers eager to put down deposits before the car is even completed.

Explaining the logistics, Mendez stated: "We will field three cars in every event. The three cars shipped to the Americas will stay there, as we plan to sell them on-site along with spare parts and the full equipment package. We will then prepare three brand-new cars for the European rounds."

On the technical side, RMC's car will be powered by a PSA-derived engine, identical to the unit used by Lancia. However, RMC will develop the powerplant independently after Stellantis declined to sell engines directly to the Spanish squad. The drivetrain features an Xtrac gearbox and Sachs suspension, developed with input from engineers possessing extensive Formula 1 experience alongside Honda.
