He's from Porto, she's from Buenos Aires: In the Caravan of Love, They Dream of a Portugal-Argentina Final
TORONTO — Some traverse continents for tourism, others follow luxury resort itineraries and warm waters, but for Pedro and Lupe, the ultimate honeymoon is written in nylon nets, polyester jerseys, and the endless asphalt of North America.
Pedro Borges, a native of Porto, lived in Germany for ten years. Guadalupe, or Lupe to her friends, hails from Buenos Aires. Together, they split their lives between the banks of the Douro River and the vibrant pulse of Argentina.
But currently, they share something more: four wheels and a destination etched onto the 2026 World Cup map with their project, A Caravana do Golo (The Goal Caravan), an adventure that began long before their wheels touched North American soil.
Honeymoon 'Road Trip' Mode Towards the World Cup Final:
“We’re living what we call a long honeymoon,” Lupe says with a wide smile, approached on a Toronto street where the couple spreads their infectious good cheer. They’ve already journeyed through Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and crossed the interior of Brazil and the Amazon.
But the grand plan was reserved for the United States: rent an RV in Miami and, from there, follow the trail of the Portuguese and Argentine national teams. If either team has a match, the caravan rolls out.
“Our appeal is to the vintage. It’s about seeing football as a pure way to bring friends together, celebrate with cold beers, and cheer for goals,” Pedro explains, referencing the improvised sign on the back of their vehicle: “Birra fria y barata” (Cold and cheap beer), plastered right next to a huge Portuguese flag.
On board, the atmosphere is a cultural mosaic of love and football. There are national scarves, plush toys with patriotic hats, and the ever-present cabin television that never turns off when the ball is in play.
The stands of BMO Field in Toronto have already felt the energy of this couple who, between friends and open roads, are launching viral challenges on Instagram. Dallas is next. And they have a clear message for their followers.
“We want to challenge everyone to wear a piece of polyester every day. Value polyester! Later, when you see images from this World Cup, you’ll remember that this was polyester paradise,” Pedro jokes.
Their travel wardrobe includes textile relics from various national teams worldwide, defying North America's scorching temperatures. However, behind the relaxed demeanor lies a clear goal and a dream that runs parallel to both their hearts. The ultimate objective is set for July 19th in New Jersey. For Pedro and Lupe, the perfect script for their destiny has already been written by the football gods.
“The big dream is to reach New Jersey and witness a final between Portugal and Argentina. The last dance for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi,” the couple confesses. It would be a golden finale for the Goal Caravan: Porto and Buenos Aires facing off on the planet’s most important pitch.
Not even last-minute strategic changes deter their focus. Sometimes, they temporarily swap roads for planes to avoid missing crucial matches, transforming the caravan into an impromptu “goal jet.”
The journey continues, with love and football rolling in sync on American highways. If the brave nation proved in Toronto that it knows how to suffer, Pedro and Lupe prove every day that passion knows no bounds. Football remains the most beautiful excuse to chase a dream.
