Hell at High Altitude and a Nod to Maradona's Hand. England Faces Mexican Colossus
Mexico boasts four victories without conceding a single goal. They dominated Group A with 9 points and then defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 16, with Julian Quinones, the team's top scorer in the tournament with three goals, finding the net. A potential win in the Round of 16 would equal Mexico's best-ever World Cup performance and mark their first return to the quarterfinals since hosting the tournament in 1986.
England topped Group L with 7 points and advanced to the Round of 16 by overcoming DR Congo 2-1, thanks to a brace from Harry Kane. The "Three Lions" captain has scored five goals in the current tournament. "We definitely still have things to work on, but at this stage of the tournament, it's all about progressing. We're now at a point in the championship where you literally have to grind out victories, and that's exactly what we did," Kane stated, according to the FIFA website.
These two nations have only met once before in a World Cup, with England defeating Mexico 2-0 to secure their first victory at home in the 1966 tournament, which they ultimately won. "They have important players both domestically and abroad. They are physically very strong and play quality football. I remember their change in playing style began under Gareth Southgate, and Thomas Tuchel has built upon that. They are a team that can play in two different ways. They used to be primarily fast and direct, capable of overwhelming you. Today, they can still do that, but if they find it's not working, they can adapt their approach. There have been many great matches in the history of Mexican football, and this will be one of them," declared Mexico's coach, Javier Aguirre.
The Mexicans are highly motivated to eliminate one of the tournament favorites. The home crowd will once again provide extra energy. The match will be played at an altitude of 2240 meters above sea level. Furthermore, "El Tri" has never lost at this iconic venue during a World Cup. "It's a match everyone dreams of, playing against England in the Round of 16 at this stadium. It will probably be one of the biggest matches we experience as players. We know they have quality footballers and we know their style of play. Their midfield, in particular, is exceptionally physically strong. They have great players in every position. It will be an excellent opponent," added Mexico's midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo, echoing his coach's sentiments.
History
England returns to the site where, in 1986, they fell to eventual champions Argentina after Diego Maradona's legendary "Hand of God." The "Three Lions" hope to go deep into the tournament again, following their semi-final appearance in 2018 and quarter-final in 2022. "The altitude will, of course, be a major disadvantage because it's physically impossible to adapt to it in four days. It's simply not possible," England coach Thomas Tuchel told AFP before flying to Mexico.
After visiting the stadium for the pre-match press conference, he added: "As soon as you walk in here and feel the atmosphere and emotions, it hits you. I immediately felt like we were in for a real World Cup match. We knew that already. We are in an iconic place, an iconic stadium."
FIFA considered moving the kick-off time earlier due to the threat of storms, but ultimately confirmed that the match would proceed as originally scheduled – on Monday, July 6th, at 2:00 AM CEST. The winner will face the victor of the Brazil-Norway match in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11th, at 11:00 PM CEST in Miami.
