Heartbreak of Elimination Replaced by Immense Joy: Manuel Neuer's Emotional Career Farewell

The gamble on the 40-year-old goalkeeper didn't pay off, as the four-time world champions exited after the first knockout round. Germany fell to Paraguay 3-4 in a penalty shootout. Manuel Neuer, a World Cup winner in 2014, conceded a goal in each of Germany's four appearances at the 2026 World Cup. While he did save one Paraguayan spot-kick, it wasn't enough. However, the issue wasn't his saves, but rather the missed opportunities by his teammates.

"Everyone is disappointed and sad about the elimination. Today, we simply didn't have the strength to decide the match in our favor. And we also lacked that proverbial bit of luck. This was my last game in a Germany jersey," Neuer stated in an interview with MagentaTV.

Despite the somber end to his international career with the Nationalelf, Neuer had a personal reason to celebrate. His wife watched the Germany-Paraguay match live from the stands in Boston, with a German jersey tied across her chest, revealing her growing baby bump.

Former professional handball player, 26-year-old Anika Bissell, has been in a relationship with Manuel Neuer since 2020. The couple had a civil wedding in November 2023, followed by a grand celebration with family and friends in South Tyrol in the summer of 2025.

"By then, their son Luca was already present. The little boy was born on March 14, 2024. Just a few weeks ago, it became clear that he is a spitting image of his father Manuel. For the last match of the past Bundesliga season, the long-serving Bayern Munich goalkeeper even brought his baby onto the pitch at the Allianz Arena. Luca wore a small neon-green goalkeeper jersey with 'Papa' written on it," reported the Bunte magazine website.
