At that time, it was expected to win the Goal of the Month votes by a wide margin before Carroll scored a scissors kick goal for West Ham against Crystal Palace also in January.

Even with Carroll’s goal, Giroud was still expected to scoop the award.

It, however, came as a shock to many as Carroll was on Friday, February 10 announced as the winner of the Goal of the Month.

“I'm delighted to have won the goal of the month competition, especially given how good some of the other goals were,' Carroll told the club's official website upon being presented the honour,” Carroll said as he was presented his award at West ham’s training ground on Friday.

“As soon as I hit it I knew it was in, I got a good connection and knew it would hit the back of the net. It's definitely the best goal I've ever scored, one I'm very proud of.

“I enjoy every goal I score, but that one was certainly a little bit more special – I don't think I'll ever get bored of watching that one back.”

Carroll has six goals from 12Premier League appearances.
