The event in Budapest was won by Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou.

Meanwhile, Fatoumata Diallo, the national record holder in the discipline, failed to qualify for the 400-meter hurdles final. The athlete, who also earned a bronze medal at the European Championships in Birmingham, finished her heat in fifth position with a time of 53.90 seconds. Despite the elimination, this marked the fourth time in a month that the Portuguese runner completed the distance in under 54 seconds.
