Fans pay tribute to victims of Morandi bridge disaster with 43 minutes of silence during Serie A clash against Empoli

In Genoa’s first game since that incident, the fans were silent for 43 minutes in honour of each of the victims.

As with a football game, the silence was hard to maintain as there were occasional muted cheers when Genoa attacked but it there was muted celebrations when the home side scored twice in the first 20 minutes.

Applause broke out in the 43rd minute as the names of the victims were displayed on a screen.

Normal cheers resumed after that.

Genoa won the game 2-1.

Genoa had to postpone their away tip to AC Milan in the opening weekend of the 2018/2019 season after he disaster earlier in August.

Over the weekend, fans all over the Italy held banners with messages of solidarity for the victims.
