Spanish international Gavi has no doubt that Portugal boasts a "very strong squad." In an interview with "Mundo Deportivo," the Barcelona midfielder discussed the upcoming Round of 16 clash at the 2026 World Cup, praising his Iberian rivals. According to him, they are the toughest opponent Spain has faced so far in the tournament.
"It's clear they are the strongest opponent we've played against so far. They are a great team, with many excellent players. I hope we are mentally prepared for what we need to do, to follow the coach's plan, and together win this knockout match," Gavi stated, before commenting on Cristiano Ronaldo.
"His teammates certainly have immense respect for him. It's obvious that Cristiano is one of the greatest players in history and can make a difference at any moment," he emphasized.
On the pitch, Gavi will face his friend João Cancelo, but as the saying goes, friendship takes a backseat in such moments. "The truth is, we haven't spoken. I think we are both fully focused on the match. I don't expect him to talk to me before the game ends, nor will I. Everyone is focused on their country, their national team, and winning."
And what is the key to defeating Portugal? Gavi believes the Spanish team already possesses it: "They are a team very similar to ours. The key is to continue with the momentum we've shown. The important thing is for the entire team to be united. Ultimately, I think that's what makes us stronger, and if we continue like this, everything will surely be fine."
Spain lost to Portugal in the Nations League final last year (2-2 after extra time, 5-3 on penalties). The Barcelona midfielder did not participate in that match, but he believes the defeat will serve as additional motivation for the upcoming encounter.
"Yes, perhaps it's an extra motivation, a bonus. That match was decided by penalties. I think we were the better team then and deserved to win, but in football, the one who scores more goals wins. I hope we are all focused and the chances we create find the back of the net."
