Gavi No Soft Touch: Doesn't Want Paredes Punished After Clash, Says 'It's Part of Football'

Spanish footballer Gavi does not want Argentina's Leandro Paredes to face a ban for his involvement in a post-match altercation following Sunday's World Cup final, which Spain won 1-0 to claim the title.

Paredes, his teammate Nahuel Molina, and Argentina's assistant coach Roberto Ayala were all involved in a post-match skirmish moments after the final whistle at the East Rutherford stadium. While the International Football Federation (FIFA) confirmed Paredes did not receive a red card on the pitch, its disciplinary committee has tasked a prosecutor with investigating potential breaches of disciplinary regulations.

"I don't believe Paredes should be suspended. I understand it's not a great image for kids, but I think this is also part of football, which can be a bit more physical and aggressive. The most logical thing would have been to send him off during the game, and that would have been the end of it. Ultimately, I think all of this is part of football and has to be," Gavi told the program El Partidazo de COPE.

Paredes was seen grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat before throwing Gavi to the ground. Footage also showed Molina striking Spain captain Rodri, and Ayala punching Dani Olmo in the face. Argentina finished the final with ten men after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card in second-half stoppage time for a dangerous tackle on Pau Cubarsi. DPA news agency reported the incident.
