The inaugural edition of the event, part of the professional ITF World Tennis Tour and contributing to ATP rankings, is scheduled for June 15-21, 2026, at the Clube de Ténis da Lourinhã facilities. The tournament is expected to draw some of the most promising international tennis talents.

The selection of Gastão Elias as tournament director is particularly symbolic, given that the athlete hails from Lourinhã. Elias notably reached a career-high ATP ranking of 57, represented Portugal in the Davis Cup, and was the first Portuguese tennis player to win a match at the Olympic Games. His impressive career includes 18 international titles, ten of which were secured on the ATP Challenger circuit, a national record.

“This international tournament aims to establish Lourinhã on the global tennis circuit, boosting the municipality and promoting sports participation within the community,” stated Gastão Elias. The tournament director further expressed his intention to “create a platform that encourages the professional development of young Portuguese talents, leveraging my own connection and journey as a native Lourinhã athlete to inspire new generations of tennis players.”

With free admission throughout the week, organizers anticipate the Lourinhã Open will become a highlight on the national sports calendar. The event seeks to offer the local community the chance to witness high-level tennis free of charge and interact with athletes from various nations, celebrating the bond between the community and one of its greatest sporting ambassadors.
