Justin Gaethje is savoring his time as champion and won't be stepping back into the octagon until 2027.

The reigning undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion has yet to decide his next move, but one thing is certain: he won't be competing again until late 2026.

Gaethje has already endured two grueling fights this year – first in a contentious clash with Paddy Pimblett in January, then delivering a massive upset by stopping Ilia Topuria in the main event of UFC White House in June. While he emerged victorious from both bouts, Gaethje didn't escape unscathed, which explains his decision to take the necessary time to recover before considering his next fight.

“I still can't punch anything,” Gaethje stated in an interview with Sports Illustrated. “Both of my hands are still injured from the fight, so I'm just going to enjoy being champion for the rest of the year, as I've already fought twice in the first six months.”

“I'll put everything on paper, pros and cons, talk to my family and everyone who loves me to be honest with me, and then I'll make a decision,” he added.

Gaethje has hinted at plans to fight again, but with several months remaining in 2026, it's always possible he could change his mind. However, if he chooses to defend his undisputed title, Gaethje has numerous options. He hasn't shown much interest in an immediate rematch with Topuria, though. While Topuria hasn't commented extensively since the fight, there's been considerable speculation that he might receive an immediate rematch against Gaethje.

Gaethje scoffed at the idea, considering Topuria was unable to get off his stool after the fourth round when the fight was stopped.

Regardless of whether Gaethje wants that rematch or not, he acknowledged that the UFC will decide his next opponent, and he will face whoever they designate – if he decides to fight again at all.

“Ultimately, the UFC decides who I fight next,” Gaethje said. “I assume if I don't fight until next year, Topuria probably won't either, as he's also still recovering from some things. My gut feeling is that this won't be my next fight.”
