Timea Bacsinszky stuns Petra Kvitova to reach last eight
Timea Bacsinszky came from a set down to stun Petra Kvitova in the French Open fourth round and reach the first grand slam quarter-final of her career.
Bacsinszky, seeded 23rd for the clay-court tournament, produced a sterling fightback to knock out the fourth seed 2-6 6-0 6-3.
The Swiss will now take on unseeded Alison Van Uytvanck in the quarters and will be eyeing a potential semi-final meeting with world number one Serena Williams.
Kvitova was rewarded for some typically brilliant groundstroke play with a break in the fourth game when a fierce return forced Bacsinszky to put a double-handed backhand into the net.
The Czech briefly lost concentration to hand the advantage straight back, but from there Kvitova reeled off three straight games - rounding off the opening set when Bacsinszky could only put another stinging forehand into the net.
It was all change at the beginning of the second, though, Bacsinszky broke at the first time of asking before pressing home for a double-break 3-0 lead when a Kvitova mis-hit skewed wide.
Having consolidated the lead, Bacsinszky moved within a game of levelling the match when, on the third break-point, Kvitova returned a stinging forehand long. Bacsinszky served out the second on her third set-point.
Bacsinszky then went a break up in the decider with a break in the fifth game that she immediately surrendered as Kvitova levelled.
However, Kvitova - who committed 41 unforced errors - continued to struggle on serve and sent a forehand long to give Bacsinszky a 4-3 lead that she consolidated by rattling off the last two games to seal a superb win.
