French Legend Writes Off Harry Kane's Ballon d'Or Hopes

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has warned Harry Kane that his failure to win a major trophy might have cost him his chances for the Ballon d'Or. Kane recently experienced another World Cup disappointment, with England exiting at the semi-final stage in the USA. The striker scored six goals in seven tournament matches. The 32-year-old Kane netted 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions, helping Bayern secure the Bundesliga title and the German Cup. However, he couldn't lift his first Champions League trophy, as the German side only reached the semi-finals.

"Harry Kane's chances for the Ballon d'Or are over. If we're talking solely about the German league, fine, no problem. But in the Champions League and with the national team, when it really got tough to win, I think he disappeared. I can't point fingers at him because he tried everything he could and scored many goals, but he lacked impact in the big games, just like in the Champions League. So, I think there are a few names ahead of him."

While Petit believes Kane is no longer a Ballon d'Or contender, he suggested that several Spanish stars are now firmly in the running following their World Cup success.

"Yamal? He had a great World Cup. You know, the Ballon d'Or rules have changed so much, just like the rules on the pitch. Rodri was once again the best player during this competition. Messi had a great tournament, but he plays for Miami. I know the World Cup trumps any club title you want. But at the same time, you have to win the title. Will it be a Spanish player? I have no idea. But it will be tough. And finally, I hope it won't be a commercial decision," Petit concluded.

Kane is currently on vacation after his international duties, but upon his return to Bayern Munich, he is expected to begin negotiations for a new contract with the German giants.
