Forgetting the Dark Night in Madrid: Yabusele and Željko at Panathinaikos – The Beast Who Troubled Partizan Now Listens to Obradović!
Yabusele arrives in Athens following several challenging NBA seasons, marked by a lack of consistency and underperformance with the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Chicago Bulls. His return to Europe, foregoing a significant sum of money to regain his prominence in the EuroLeague, was news in itself. However, his new destination adds a layer of intrigue: he will once again collaborate with Obradović, the very coach who led Partizan on that fateful night of April 27, 2023, which brought European basketball to a standstill, as recalled by "As" newspaper.
Fate Brings Them Together
That match between Real Madrid and Partizan at the WiZink Center is remembered for a massive brawl. Sergio Llull's unsportsmanlike foul ignited the chaos, culminating in 21 players ejected and the game suspended. Amidst the pandemonium, Yabusele committed the most egregious and shameful act: he grabbed Dante Exum by the neck, wrestling him to the court. The Frenchman received the harshest penalty of a five-game suspension, though many believed it could have been even more severe.
Yabusele Seeks Career Revival Under Željko
On the other hand, Obradović remained composed, attempting to de-escalate the situation. He calmly left the court, conversing with Rudy Fernández, and had to intervene to prevent his players from clashing with fans. His message after the incident was both firm and conciliatory:
"I don't know what to say. Everything is in the hands of the referees and the EuroLeague. What happened is not good for basketball. Such things must never happen again. We need to talk about basketball. When we talk about basketball, there's nothing better," Željko Obradović stated at the time.
The playoff series concluded with an epic comeback by Real Madrid, who overturned a 0-2 deficit. Yabusele, while players from both teams were still on the court, addressed the crowd with the words "This is Madrid," a phrase etched into the memory of the "Royal Club" fans. Since then, the question has lingered: what would a reunion between the French player and the Serbian coach look like?
Let Bygones Be Bygones...
The answer will now be written in green. Much time has passed, passions have cooled, and basketball always prevails in the end. Nevertheless, curiosity is inevitable, as two protagonists of one of the most chaotic nights in EuroLeague history are now united in the same locker room, with the same goal and under the same emblem.
Furthermore, Panathinaikos is undergoing a significant reconstruction this summer. Obradović returns to the club after 14 years, accompanied by familiar faces like Mike Batiste in the coaching staff and Dimitris Diamantidis in club management. The team is rapidly strengthening. Moustapha Fall has already signed, Isaac Bonga and Brancou Badio have also arrived in Athens, and Yabusele himself is part of the reinforcement package that President Dimitris Giannakopoulos promised as "four big transfers."
In this project, Yabusele plays a crucial role: to return to his best form, prove that his return to Europe is not a step backward but a rebirth, and to do so under the guidance of a coach who, although present on the darkest night of his career, was never an enemy, but merely a witness.
