In the Champions League, five wins were secured, three of which were clean sheets. Manchester United delivered the most convincing performance, a 4-0 thrashing of Azerbaijani debutants Sabah. Liverpool also triumphed at home, coming from behind to beat Spanish side Atletico Madrid 2-1. The remaining three victories came on the road: Arsenal edged out Italian giants Napoli 1-0, Manchester City dispatched Portuguese club Porto 2-0, and Aston Villa secured a 3-2 win against Belgian outfit Club Brugge. Despite making their Europa League debuts, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth also emerged victorious. The Black Cats celebrated a 1-0 home win over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, the Eagles soared to a 4-0 demolition of visiting Polish team Lech Poznań, and Bournemouth claimed a 2-1 away victory against Spanish club Real Sociedad.

Should Brighton live up to expectations and win their home fixture against Lithuanian side Kauno Žalgiris in the Europa Conference League on October 15th, all nine English teams will have registered victories in the opening round of European competitions.
