Elizabeth Holmes' Theranos Story Is About To Be A Hulu Series Starring Kate McKinnon
If you thought the buzz around Elizabeth Holmes and her Silicon Valley scandal would soon be quieting down, you'd be, well, quite wrong.
Following in the footsteps of HBO's documentary The Inventor, Hulu just ordered a limited series based on ABC News/ABC Radio's "The Dropout" podcast, which details the rise and fall of the founder of blood-testing company Theranos. Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon will executive produce the drama (note: not comedy)-and will also play the disgraced Elizabeth.
In case you haven't been following, Elizabeth Holmes founded the Theranos startup as an alternative to traditional blood testing, "using proprietary technology that required only a finger pinprick and a small amount of blood, that would be able to detect medical conditions like cancer and high cholesterol," Business Insider reported. She reportedly turned it into a $9 billion company-until she was exposed as a fraud, because the technology didn't actually exist. Elizabeth currently faces charges (multiple counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and wire fraud) and could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.
Her story will also play out on the big screen: Jennifer Lawrence has been cast as Elizabeth in an upcoming movie, Bad Blood, based on the book by John Carreyrou (Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup).
TBD on the drop date of both the Hulu show and the J.Law movie, but you can expect that when they hit, a serious debate on which format covered the story best will be next.
