Draymond Green: I Hope Steve Kerr is Our Coach Next Season, But I Feel He Won't Be
Veteran forward Draymond Green believes his long-time Golden State Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, might depart the team before the start of the next NBA season.
The Warriors were eliminated in the Play-In Tournament, missing the NBA playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons. Following their 96-111 loss to the Phoenix Suns, Steve Kerr stated he would reflect on his future in the coming weeks.
Green, 36, who has been a consistent starter under Kerr since the coach took the helm in 2014, anticipates the American specialist's tenure could conclude before the next campaign begins.
“I hope he’s our coach next season. You want my opinion? I don’t think he will be. That’s just the feeling. I felt like that was the end,” Draymond Green explained on his podcast, as reported by ESPN.
After the elimination by Phoenix, Steve Kerr stood alone with Green and fellow long-serving player Steph Curry courtside, marking the end of their 12th season together. Microphones in the arena captured his words: “I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I love you guys very much. Thank you.”
In his 12 seasons leading the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr has won four NBA championships and reached the Finals two other times, including the 2015-16 season when the team set an NBA record for most regular-season wins with 73. In 2022, he was named among the 15 greatest head coaches in NBA history, and in March 2025, he became the winningest coach in Warriors franchise history.
Steve Kerr led the U.S. national team to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and in 2023, under his guidance, the team finished fourth at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
As a player, he is a five-time NBA champion – three times with the Chicago Bulls (1996, 1997, 1998) and twice with the San Antonio Spurs (1999 and 2003).
