Disciplinary Committee Sanctions Manchester United Defender with Additional Ban
The 33-year-old centre-back received a red card in the second half of March after a foul on Evanilson, which led to Junior Kroupi converting a penalty and securing a 2-2 draw for Bournemouth. Maguire missed the "Red Devils'" home fixture on Monday, where United fell 1-2 to rivals Leeds United.
The English Football Association (FA) stated that fourth official Matthew Donohue reported Maguire for insulting officials as he left the pitch following his dismissal. Maguire claimed his offensive remarks were not directed at anyone specifically. Nevertheless, the FA imposed an additional suspension and a £30,000 fine, equivalent to just under 35,000 euros.
"It was alleged that Harry Maguire's language and/or behaviour after his dismissal was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper towards the fourth official," read the official statement. The defender subsequently admitted the charge.
Maguire's absence further complicates United's defensive woes, already hit by injuries to fellow central defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez. Youngster Ayden Heaven could step in to fill Maguire's spot in defence, potentially playing alongside 20-year-old Leny Yoro in the match against Chelsea.
Manchester United currently sit third in the Premier League table, while FC Chelsea are sixth, six points adrift of their upcoming opponents.
