French national team coach Didier Deschamps stated that Spain and Argentina are fully deserving finalists for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. He dismissed claims that the head referee influenced France's semi-final exit against "La Furia." Deschamps also emphasized France's objective to secure the bronze medals in the third-place playoff against England.
"Spain were better and deserve to be in the final, and so do Argentina. They defeated all their opponents.
We are obligated to give our all and achieve our ultimate goal. We must respect the game of football. This is a World Cup," he added. "This isn't a friendly match. This is a playoff for third place. The players, the staff, and I have a duty to achieve this final objective. It's less significant than the final. England doesn't want to play this match, and neither do we. But here we are.
We need to focus on the goal of finishing third and making that final objective a reality. We have this obligation when we wear this jersey. In my mind, I know this is my last match. I don't want anyone to cry. My time as a coach is nearing its end, but life goes on," Deschamps concluded.
