Following France's tense 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16, "Les Bleus" coach Didier Deschamps hinted that some remarks from the South American side had, to put it mildly, crossed a line. French media speculate that the World Cup winner, both as a player and coach, was referring to insults directed at his late mother from the Paraguayan bench.

"I would have done without the insults from the bench. Especially some of them." Uttered with a somber expression and serious tone, these words from Didier Deschamps at the post-match press conference, after France's hard-fought 1-0 win against Paraguay in the World Cup last 16, left the impression that the coach had been subjected to insults from the Paraguayans during the game, and that some of these might have been directed, even unintentionally, at his recently deceased mother.

The question was directly posed to Paraguay's coach, Gustavo Alfaro, shortly thereafter. After a 50-minute press conference reserved solely for Paraguayan journalists, where contentious topics were avoided, Alfaro agreed to address a small group of persistent French reporters. First, to comment on the tension and excessive provocations during the match.

"The first thing I did after the final whistle was to go and find Didier Deschamps," he stated. "I wished him to reach the final and become a world champion. I had already told him before the match: he has a fantastic team."

Nevertheless, Gustavo Alfaro defended his players' aggressive style: "Football is a sport of clashes, of duels. But everything begins and ends on the pitch. Inevitably, there are skirmishes, contacts, tension; that's part of the game. We were in no way hostile," the Paraguayan coach asserted.

"Perhaps there were some incidents, with Mbappé or others," he continued. "Maybe he also said some things during the match. For me, on the field, it's a battle where everyone plays with their own weapons. Everything is born on the field and everything dies on the field; after that, it's over."

When specifically asked about potential insults directed at Didier Deschamps' recently deceased mother, Gustavo Alfaro vowed he would never tolerate such behavior. "No, absolutely not. We cannot stoop so low in football. Never. I thought you were referring to the exchanges between players during the match. I respect him immensely and admire him greatly.

Yes, there were disputes, especially around VAR. Some wanted a penalty, others didn't. But, honestly, I have never heard such insults. And knowing my staff, I am convinced that none of them would behave in that manner," Alfaro stated emphatically.

Thus, the Paraguayan coach refused to apologize for an incident whose existence he denied, while also distancing himself from such personal attacks. "Football is not war. I will not apologize for something that, to my knowledge, did not happen. On the other hand, I am completely against such behavior. If I had heard such words, I myself would have reacted immediately. That is unacceptable. I am completely against it," Alfaro added.
