Bjarne Riis implicated in Anti-Doping Denmark report
Former Tinkoff-Saxo team manager Bjarne Riis has been implicated in a report published by Anti-Doping Denmark (ADD) in relation to his time with Team CSC.
ADD director Michael Ash confirmed Riis admitted he was aware that doping was taking place within the team " that subsequently became Tinkoff-Saxo " but failed to act.
However, Riis, sacked by Tinkoff-Saxo boss Oleg Tinkov in March, is unlikely to face any action for his involvement in the scandal due to the violations falling outside of the World Anti-Doping Agency's eight-year limitation period.
"Unfortunately, the investigation revealed doping at Team CSC that can not only be aimed at each of the riders," he said.
"The team management, with Bjarne Riis as the chief, has at least had knowledge of doping on the team, but failed to intervene. It is totally unacceptable.
"He had " as leader " a particular responsibility and an obligation to act, as they [the rules], in our view were not adhered to.
"But when circumstances are beyond the limitation periods, we cannot bring doping cases [against him]."
Riis was one of many names within the ADD report into doping within Danish cycling, the agency revealing they interviewed 50 people in relation to the violations.
As part of the report's recommendations, ADD have also called on the International Cycling Union to introduce a "fit assessment" for sports directors and doctors with pro-cyling teams to help eliminate doping.
