Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup appearance, a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 Round of 16, saw him equal an unenviable record. No player has suffered more losses in World Cup finals than the Portuguese national team captain. The 41-year-old forward now shares the distinction of being the player with the most World Cup defeats in history.

Across 27 matches, Ronaldo has been on the losing side in 8 of them. This puts him level with Antonio Carbajal (Mexico, 1950-1962), Myung-bo Hong (South Korea, 1990-2002), Heung-min Son (South Korea, 2014-2026), and Matthew Leckie (Australia, 2014-2026). He has also secured 12 victories and 7 draws.

Prior to the 2026 clash with Spain, Cristiano experienced defeats in the 2022 World Cup against Morocco (0-1, quarter-finals) and South Korea (1-2, group stage). In the 2018 edition, Portugal fell to Uruguay (1-2) in the Round of 16. The 2014 campaign saw them exit in the group stage after a heavy 0-4 loss to Germany, and in 2010, Spain again eliminated them in the Round of 16 (0-1). Finally, in his debut World Cup in 2006, France defeated Portugal 1-0 in the semi-finals, followed by another loss to Germany (1-3) in the third-place playoff.

Conversely, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo's long-time rival for the Ballon d'Or, holds the record for the most World Cup victories. The Argentine forward boasts 20 wins, three more than Miroslav Klose and four more than Cafu and Kylian Mbappé.
