Argentine defender Cristian Romero has returned to full training ahead of the world champions' Round of 16 clash against Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup. The match is scheduled for July 4th at 1:00 AM Bulgarian time in Miami. Romero sustained a knee injury early in the second half of their 2-0 victory over Austria in the second-round Group J fixture on June 22nd, forcing his substitution in the 57th minute.
He subsequently missed the final group stage match against Jordan (3-1) on June 28th, with veteran Nicolás Otamendi stepping in as his replacement. Coach Lionel Scaloni had made several changes to the starting lineup for that game, given that the South Americans had already secured top spot in their group.
Scaloni himself had previously stated that the injury to the Tottenham Hotspur center-back was not serious and that he expected Romero to be available for the team's knockout stage matches. The Argentine squad was given Sunday off, and Romero participated fully in Monday's training session alongside his teammates, confirming the coach's optimistic prognosis.
