Paulo Costa unleashed a verbal barrage at the UFC 327 pre-fight press conference, repeatedly attacking his upcoming opponent, Azamat Murzakanov, and revealing a strong dislike for anyone from Russia. The Brazilian believes he was given this fight by the UFC for one reason only: to send Murzakanov "to the shadow realm." Initially, the bout between Costa and Murzakanov was part of the main card but was elevated to the co-main event after the flyweight championship clash between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira was moved to UFC 328 in May.
"Look, I'm in the co-main event for one reason: I'm going to beat this fat Russian on Saturday," Costa yelled. "I'm going to finish him badly. He knows it. Look at him. He's nervous. He's shy, and I'm going to expose him on Saturday. This isn't the time for boring fights. This is the Paramount era, live on CBS. I'm here to put on a show," declared the former title contender.
Almost every time a question was directed at Murzakanov during the press conference, Costa interrupted the Russian's answer to attack him. However, due to the language barrier, it's unclear how much Murzakanov understood of what was being said against him. This didn't stop Costa from repeatedly assailing him, with insults including numerous jabs calling Murzakanov "fat."
"He has nothing to say. Absolutely nothing to say. Nothing. Shut the hell up. You have nothing. On Saturday, I'm going to kick your fat ass," the South American continued.
Costa also lashed out at all fighters from Russia. He recalled defeating Roman Kopylov in his last fight and expressed hope that after UFC 327, he would finally settle scores with another Russian.
"I'm very calm right now. Latin blood runs through my veins. I represent Latin America, not this Russian. You know, I hate these damn Russians. This is the second one in a row I'll add to my record. Dana, maybe the third will be Khamzat Chimaev. I want him next, after I beat this fat guy."
For his part, Murzakanov mostly smiled and laughed at everything Costa said, though he found it difficult to respond without the Brazilian interrupting him. Perhaps he doesn't need to say much, as Murzakanov does his talking in the octagon, where he boasts a perfect 6-0 record in the UFC, including five knockout victories. Murzakanov promises that his sixth knockout win is coming on Saturday.
"On Saturday, I will teach him manners," Murzakanov stated. "He is nervous, that's why he is aggressive. Don't worry. It will all be over quickly."
